Keanu Reeves is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

We got wind of a Jekyll and Hyde project circling at Universal when it was released that director Guillermo Del Toro had a bunch of projects in development at Universal.

Now it seems Universal is wanting Keanu Reeves to star in the classic Robert Stevensen tale but it isn’t the Del Toro version. I know…this sounds confusing, Universal is developing 2 Jekyll and Hyde vehicles?

The difference in the 2 projects is one is a modern day story that mirrors the classic tale while Del Toro’s version will be a direct adaptation featuring the gothic elements that Del Toro likes in his films.

The Hollywood Reporter states that the project is being kept under wraps, “locked in the laboratory” and that this one is being fast tracked seeking not only Reeves to star but Nicolas Winding Refn to direct the project.

Speculation is that the modern retelling will revolve around Reeves playing someone with a multiple personality disorder and his Mr. Hyde persona probably runs a muck killing peeps while his alter ego Jekyll is none the wiser. They sort of did this movie a fews years ago with Kevin Costner called, Mr. Brooks, in which Costner’s character played someone who had a complete fictional friend played by William Hurt and they would plot murders. It will be interesting to see what they come up with in the upcoming story as Del Toro’s classic version is on the slow track being he is working on The Hobbit. As far as Reeves is concerned, he could play a really cool modern Jekyll/Hyde character.
