Disney’s Tomorrowland Details Surface
Last September we reported that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was set to star in another theme park ride film adaptation for Disney called Tomorrowland.
Jon Lucas and Scott Moore were hired to draft an epic-sized action adventure set in space. Originally Disney denied the film having been titled Tomorrowland or that it was dedicated to their theme park’s section, a futuristic area of the Magic Kingdom that includes such attractions such as Space Mountain. The studio called the project an original script.
Now our friends over at Collider got to talk to the two writers who also penned The Hangover and they had this to say about the film,
“…they are turning in a script in about three weeks to the studio…His [The Rock] character”s name is Rip and he plays a present day test pilot who tests a plane and gets shot into the future and so he is sort of a fish out of water in the future…”
I am cutting this quote because I have to point out this sounds just like Buck Rogers in the 25th Century to me.
“…So he has to figure out how everything works and along the way the people of the future don’t know who he is, so they think he is a bad guy bent on destroying the future. So Rip is sort of on the run…a sci-fi/action/comedy. Disney had a lot of success with Pirates of the Caribbean, so this is their Pirates movie in space.”
The two writers also talked about what the film’s vision of the future would be like? Typically these type of films are either showing a grim future or a light one. With Disney I can guess which one?
“Our goal of the vision of the future is that it’s the best future. It’s not post apocalyptic or dark and gritty – it’s everything you wish you could have. Every gadget, device and car…that’s what it’s like in this future. So the future is really great…the movie takes place about 350 years in the future.”
Still no true reference to the Disney theme park ride in the script or from the writers but one has to assume there is or will be a tie-in somewhere. I think Disney should tie-in to the theme park look how it helped the oldest ride in the world? Not to mention if we have learned anything from Hasbro you can take a toy or a board game and make a film about it then you can do it with a theme park ride and will definitely enhance the brand.
I think the writers are on the right track of how the movie should be but I am not to keen on the fish out of water story. This is a first draft and I am sure there will be some more to come depending on how quickly Disney wants to get the film turned around.
