Development Hell: Regency’s Capricorn One Remake
Last Year it was announced that there was a remake on the table for Capricorn One. Remakes/Reboots are all the rage right now in case you didn’t know and the thought process is to bring to life and retell stories better and for a new generation of audience goers.
Back in 2007 David Dobkin (“Shanghai Knights”) was set to direct the remake originally entitled “Capricorn Two” and that shooting was slated to start later that year but that was changed when Dobkin’s involvement was never announced or corraborated with the remake. Then a year later we got an official announcement as what the remake was all about.
According to last year’s Variety article, Peter Buchman (Jurassic Park III, Guerilla) was still going to write the script for the remake, now titled, Capricorn One. New Regency also tabbed John Moore (The Omen, Max Payne) to direct a remake of the 1978 film. Elliott Gould, James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, Karen Black, Telly Savalas, Sam Waterston and Brenda Vaccaro all starred in the original 1978 thriller about the first manned Mars mission. The astronauts are pulled off the launchpad and forced for several months to work in a secret soundstage where they fake the landing expedition due to a major defect in the space vehicle which NASA just can’t admit too. Meanwhile a journalist is on the trail of the truth, yet every time he gets closer someone tries to take him out.
Since then we have not heard anything out of the project but IMDB claims it is on schedule for a 2010 release (We’ll See).
The original film both followed and inspired conspiracy theories that NASA faked the Apollo 11 moon landing on a motion-picture sound stage. Our very own Adam Joiner is someone who beleives that the moon landing was faked and after watching numerous Discovery Channel specials on the subject he has no doubt that we never went to the moon.
I am of the theory that we went to the Moon but all the photos and images the Astronauts took were damaged due to the Van Allen belt’s radiation destroying any proof they were there and therefore they had to reconstruct the trip in a sound studio.
Nothing else is really known about this remake of Capricorn One if it will revolve around the moon landing conspiracy or a Mars landing, needless to say faked space travel is one of the most interesting conspiracy theories out there today and that’s why we think this remake is actually a great idea for Hollywood and our Development Hell column. The original Capricorn One has plenty of room for improvement. The story is smart and ambitious, but the execution is extremely dated therefore it is one of those remakes that is welcomed.
Development Hell is a column on Fused Film where we discuss movies that should be made or have been circling Hollywood for a long time and know new information has been given on the projects. For all intensive purposes they are in development hell.
