Box Office: IMAX and Moms Contribute to Star Trek’s Official Gross of $79.2 Million
I get a lot of flack in the film blogosphere for not knowing what I am talking about most of the time and that I speculate too much almost to the point of “exaggerated hopelessness” but every once in awhile I get something right. Today I am doing my “I Got it Right” dance as Star Trek raked in $79.5 million, just a little short of my $80 million bet, on its official gross. Much like Kirk I hate losing so even though I was a little off and technically still wrong, I’ll take this as a victory just to amp up my blog cred.
The news comes straight from Paramount’s mouth and the press release informs us that the opening weekend tally for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek was substantially higher than initial estimates, of which we also reported, that were around $76 million.
However the Paramount Pictures release actually grossed $79.2 million over the three day period in 3,849 locations, almost $3 million higher than initial estimates thanks to strong attendance on Mother’s Day. Initially, the well-reviewed adventure was expected to bring in $18.3 million on Sunday, but ended up grossing around $21 million which is due to better than expected family attendance.
The film’s generational appeal was definitely a significant factor and according to execs at Paramount,
“This demonstrates that the combination of strong reviews and solid word-of-mouth contributed to better than anticipated attendance by families yesterday, confirming our belief that ‘Star Trek’ has a broad, multi-generational appeal,”
said Rob Moore, Vice-Chairman of Paramount Pictures. Even though we Trekkies and Trekkers would like to completely thank our moms for the help in making Trek a significant appeal again, new theater going technologies and experiences certainly played their roles as well.
IMAX also played a significant role in the film’s Box Office success shattering virtually every opening weekend IMAX box office record, posting $8.5 million from 138 IMAX® theaters domestically. The limited IMAX run registered a per screen average of approximately $62,000 for the weekend, marking the highest grossing Friday, Saturday and Sunday ever for an IMAX opening. IMAX’s domestic opening contributed 11% of the hit film’s overall domestic box office gross of $79.2 million on less than 2% of the screens.
The IMAX release also broke records internationally, generating more than $1.1 million from 25 IMAX screens, for a per screen average of $44,000, bringing the worldwide IMAX box office to $9.6 million.
