Universal to Reboot Videodrome

Universal Pictures is poised to remake the 1983 thriller Videodrome from director David Cronenberg. Ehren Kruger set to write the script and produce with partner Daniel Bobker.

“The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.” [Variety]

In the original version James Woods starred as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes the station relevant by creating the series Videodrome which depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers. No word on whether or not Cronenberg will be apart of the remake but he is working on the Matarese Circle to star Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington. One of Kruger’s most recent writing credits includes this summer’s Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

As a major proponent of nanotechnology I am pumped they are willing to use that as the modernized concept for this remake. Nanotechnology is a wonderful way to make sci-fi thrilling. If this movie does well I wonder if a studio would be willing to adapt Michael Crichton’s Prey which uses nanotechology in a scary almost terrifying way like the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park – in this case nanobots gone Skynet.
