Umbrella Academy Gets a Writer

Mark Bomback has been tapped to adapt the Dark Horse comic “The Umbrella Academy,” for Universal.

The Umbrella Academy is a comic book series written by My Chemical Romance frontman, Gerard Way and art by Gabriel Bá. Initially it was a six-issue limited series released by Dark Horse Comics in 2007. It won the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Finite Series/Limited Series. A second series (The Umbrella Academy: Dallas) followed in 2008 and is currently on it’s sixth issue.

The comic surprised many who initially doubted the writing talents of Gerard Way, who had no previous experience writing before ‘Umbrella.’

The main story of the first comic series is as follows: the members of the Umbrella Academy, a disbanded group of superheroes, reunite after the death of their adoptive father, “Sir Reginald Hargreeves”. Hargreeves, an alien disguised as a famous entrepreneur, collected the members of the Umbrella Academy shortly after their birth and trained them to save the world from an unspecified threat. After his death, the members carry on his plan to save the world.

Bomback’s writing credits include the DC Comics adaptation “Constantine,” “Live Free or Die Hard” and “Race to Witch Mountain.” He’s currently working on “Jack the Giant Killer” at New Line.

The Umbrella Academy is an awesome book and I would highly recommend you check it out. I love the comic and I’m hoping they can make a faithful adaptation of the property.
