TV News: Stargate Alums Return for Guest Spot in SGU

Much is already being made by fans of Stargate regarding the recent announcment that 3 Stargate franchise faves are making a return to the series as guests for the upcoming third series, Stargate: Universe.

Many beleive that the new series is bringing back Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks in order to not just bridge the the franchise series together but to also keep faith with SG-1 fans that may have not circled around Atlantis too well. (Oh yeah Chief Master Sgt. Walter Harriman (Gary Jones) will also return to play is role of technician and control room announcer).

Argument 1 - SGU can’t survive without guest stars from SG1?

I do not think it is a matter of survival for SGU, I think it is a matter of passing to the torch after 10 years of SG-1 and a few crossovers in Atlantis, Tapping, Shanks and Anderson have always been the core 3 of the franchise, to not let them pass the torch to the newest show in the franchise would almost be rude. Besides the most likely cast of there guest spots will be relugated to minor speaking roles within the SGC much like the Rising pilot for Atlantis.

Argument 2 - SGU can’t survive without crossovers, new series should stand on its own?

Agreed, I think the new series should stand on its own and I think it will. The pilot episode is 2 hours long, therefore the SG-1 members may be seen in very few scenes in the beginning.  Crossovers will never happen in this series as it revolves around a new team that can’t get home. Thus running into Atlantis or SG-1 or the SGC would be impossible once they all go through the Stargate to end up on the Ancient Ship the Destiny. The only way certain crossovers work is if you had scenes filmed at SGC involving these old characters trying to find the missing team but I do not foresee that being done.

Here are some of my thoughts as to how SG-1 will take place in the SGU pilot episode.

I see a scene where Dr. Marcus (Robert Carlyle), presumably an archeologist, speaking to Dr. Jackson (Michael Shanks) about the 9th chevron on the gate, maybe through a video conference with Stargate Command. I see another seen where Gen. O’Neill (Anderson) is speaking with Col. Telford (Diamond Phillips) either in person or through video, lastly, I see Col. Carter (Amanda Tapping) speaking with a group of scientists, presumably Eli Wallace (David Blue), a young tech/science genious and part of the main core cast for SGU.

Anyway as a fan of the longtime franchise I am glad that they are returning to pass the torch to the darker, more youth-oriented series, which judging by the first 2 trailers is going be a completely different in tone and style we have never seen before in the franchise.
