Rumor: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Back for the Big-Screen?
Perhaps one of the most uniquely best shows ever, the cult classic and critically acclaimed show about a girl who was just trying to grow up but had to grow up fast in order to protect the world from true evil. Buffy lasted 7 seasons and was the triumphant brain child of Joss Whedon, showing us the life of a girl not only having to deal with high-school, boys, friends and all the regular drama you could think of, but she had to slay vamps, demons and other apocalyptic stuff that could be thrown her way.
It has been 6 years since Buffy has been on TV but now there is rumblings of a film sequel to the show, or at least interest of a film sequel. Over the holidays this rumor came about with the success of Twilight and the sudden re-interest with a new generation wanting to see more teen vampire drama. These rumblings also came from the Paley Festival for Television in 2008 when the cast reunited and the idea was brought up by Joss Whedon who mentioned he would ignore the Season 8 comics mythos if he could bring Buffy back to the screen.
Now the former Buffy star, Sarah Michelle Gellar is throwing her name into the list of those flirting with the idea of a sequel feature film. According to an insider for ShowBizSpy,
“Insider reports say that the idea for the script has the story picking up with an older Buffy, who might even be a mother. The report further says that while Gellar is currently busy with other projects, she is excited about the idea. “Buffy still has a huge fan-base,” the insider says “So this is a movie that already has an audience.” It is further pointed out that “Michelle is a shrewd businesswoman so the chances are this will happen at some point.”
I simply would love for this to happen but will not hold my breath as Joss Whedon himself is busy with Dollhouse and Cabin in the Woods – so that right there tells me Buffy wouldn’t happen until 2011 or something like that. Also the ensemble cast members, Allison Hannigan is pregnant and wrapped up with How I Met Your Mother, David Boreanaz is starring and EP-ing Bones. The rest of the show’s cast could come back in a heart beat as their careers aren’t fluttering with opportunity in my opinion so I am sure they would leap at the chance. But whos to say this may very well be something more, after all Firefly got its chance with Serenity and Star Trek got 40 + years and was not nearly as successful in its series run.
Ideally this would be great but I’d chalk it into the bag where all the other stuff like this goes like an Independence Day 2 and Schwarzenegger coming back to play the Terminator for a full film.
