Robert Rodriguez to Co-Direct Machete
Shortly after announcing that he was going to be rebooting The Predator franchise for Fox, Rodriguez also told folks that he would be co-directing a full-length feature version of Machete, one of the fake trailers that appeared on the Grindhouse production.
“Rodriguez is eyeing a June start date in Austin for “Machete,” a film that is financed and produced by Overnight Productions, with Danny Trejo starring as the title character. Machete is a Mexican ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, who is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator. Rodriguez wrote the script and will direct the film with Ethan Maniquis, his longtime editor.” [Variety]
Machete is the first non-studio production that Rodriguez has done since El Mariachi, his big hit that led to Desperado and his emergence as major director in Hollywood. I never saw Grindhouse but it has been sitting on my Netflix instant queue for awhile so maybe I’ll check it out. I have always enjoyed most of Rodriguez’s work with the exception of the Spy Kids movie he has always entertained me with his unique shootouts and stylistic action sequences.
