Gore Verbinski Will Not Direct 4th Pirates of the Caribbean – To Direct Bioshock Instead

The director of all three previous Pirates of the Caribbean films, which grossed $2.6 billion worldwide, told Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he’s not going to be involved in the fourth entry in the series expected to come out in 2010.

Verbinski is going to focus on other projects, most notably the Bioshock film, an adaptation of my favorite videogame of 2007.

Variety reports:

“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team,” Verbinski said. “I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”

The game takes place in 1960 and is based on exploring an isolated underwater dystopia city called Rapture and surviving the mutated beings and mechanical drones within it. The architecture and society of Rapture was strongly inspired by the works of Ayn Rand, especially Atlas Shrugged.

Like I said, Bioshock was my favorite game of 2007 (and probably in my top 10 favorite games of all time as well). One of the reasons for it holding that position is the captivating story and the amazing environments found within the game. I don’t know how well Universal Pictures will be able to adapt the franchise to the big screen but I’m hoping they do it justice.
