Columbia Already Poised for Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol

As an avid fan of the beach read – the books that you read on the beach – Dan Brown has always been near the top of my list right under Crichton and Cussler. Having enjoyed most of what Brown has offered us in terms of thrilling fiction, his Robert Langdon character has taken to the heights of other famous book characters like Inspector Poirot and Dirk Pitt.

I have been actively waiting for Brown’s third installment of the Robert Langdon series originally titled The Solomon Key has now received the title, The Lost Symbol is bringing Langdon to his own country taking him on an adventure through D.C., Pennsylvania and other cities discovering our national secret of freemasonry. Last I read (and I write this based on memory) the plot of the third Langdon novel was going to concern itself with freemasonry (which has been confirmed) and its active place with politicians, government organizations and even the CIA headquarters, including the mysterious Kryptos statue in the front of the CIA in Langley, VA (this has yet to be confirmed).

Brown announced that the book would be released with 5 million copies on September 15, 2009. Even more importantly this means another film for Columbia Pictures and they are quickly securing the rights to the third film as well as spearheading it into the film franchise.

“While Columbia Pictures is prepping for the May 15 release of the Ron Howard-directed Tom Hanks-starrer “Angels & Demons,” the studio will move quickly to get the ball rolling on the third installment of the franchise.” [Variety]

I am excited about this third novel as it takes the religious and church “macguffin” out of the plot centralizes it with something more identifiable to a wider audience base. Fans of National Treasure will definitely love this movie I am sure as this book seems a return to Brown’s earlier novels such as Digital Fortress and Deception Point all taking place primarily in the US. If anyone needs a recommendation, Digital Fortress is a fantastic techno thriller and should be a movie. It deals with cryptography, the NSA and the privacy of citizens from their government and the right to privacy on the internet. There are many discussions in the book concerning whether or not it is ethical for a government organization to freely access any information stored electronically by its citizens. Anyway I can’t wait to read this new book and see the movie.
