Zac Efron Talks Johnny Quest

Moviehole, caught up with Zac Efron, about the rumors of him playing a modern day Johnny Quest in the live-action film. Last we heard Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was pegged to be playing the character of Race Bannon in the project with director Andy Fickman attached as well.

“Efron said of the project “Yeah… it’s a great idea; it’d be fun,” before noting that the project would be ways off. “It’s a long, long process. It’s so hard when people start leaking titbits. They’re very, very early on [with it] – not that it won’t happen happen, it’s just early.” He went on to say that it was “most definitely” a couple of years away.”

This idea of the project being “a couple of years away “and “a long, long process,” correlates a lot with what director, Andy Fickman, said about the project on a recent interview with the Movie Geeks United Podcast. In the interview Fickman expressed interest in the film and working with Johnson for a third time. Fickman directed Johnson in Disney’s The Game Plan and the recent Race to Witch Mountain.

What I am about to say isn’t going to help my cred that I do not have a man crush on Zac Efron as some think I do. However, I do think he would be good playing a teenage Johnny Quest along with Dev Patel by his side as Haji. I think a teenage Johnny Q is a better way to go than an 11 year old boy because your market changes and you enter the world of only being able to cater to young audiences instead of having a wide appeal. You combine cool technology into the story and you can have a really awesome adventure. I like Johnson playing Bannon but I am sure there is someone better too.

Jonny Quest first came to life as an animated series in the 1960s, where 11-year old Jonny and his friend Hadji accompanied his father, Dr. Benton Quest on a series of fantastic adventures. Also accompanying the Quest family was special agent/bodyguard Race Bannon, who would most likely be portrayed by Dwayne Johnson in the film.
