Sean Penn and Jim Carrey set for Farrelly Brothers’ Three Stooges Film

MGM and the Farrelly Brothers have reached an agreement to have actor, Sen Penn, star in a new vision of the Three Stooges.

Last we heard they were vying for the Academy Award winning actor to play Larry along with Johnny Depp to play Moe.  Sean Penn will be playing Larry and Jim Carrey will be playing Curly but the studio is looking towards Benecio Del Toro to play Moe and not Depp.

“MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for The Three Stooges. Studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome “Curly” Howard. The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe. The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.”[Variety]

As we reported back in November, Benecio Del Toro was actually a name that Bobby Farrellly mentioned he wanted for Moe. Even though Depp was rumored it is obvious that Del Toro has always been their guy. I like Jim Carrey playing the role of Curly and even wanting to gain weight for the role. As far as Sean Penn is concerned I have never been a fan of him, his movies or his demeanor outside of movies. I typically get turned off by his movies but with the Farrelly’s and Carrey in the film that may be enough for me. As long as they respect the original “Stooges” I will be OK with this movie.
