Harold Ramis Talks Ghostbusters 3

One the most treasured projects one could think of reigniting has already gotten screenwriters and a possible film date but not much else is known about the Ghostbusters 3 project. Speculation from the beginning is that the original cast would return and that Ivan Reitman would co-produce along side Judd Apatow. With the muttering of Apatow, rumors began to fly that a “young Ghostbuster” team would be introduced featuring the usual cast of Apatow characters. Then Apatow’s attachment to the project was debunked…for the time being.

MTV recently caught up with Ghostbusters co-creator and core member Harold Ramis (Dr. Egon Spangler), who has confirmed certain rumors and fleshed out certain plot points that have been speculated by many early on saying,

“Ramis promised that all the old core players will take part in the updated version, including Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman) and Dan Aykroyd (Dr. Raymond Stantz), who co-wrote the original films. “We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”

As much as I’d like to speculate as to who these “Young Ghostbusters” would be it would just be too much. The interesting note is the article mentions that Apatow is signed on as a producer for the film so you can bet that it will be someone from his little black book of friends.

“As of now, no decisions have been made about just who those new Ghostbusters will be. But with Judd Apatow signed on as a producer, the Internet has been buzzing with gossip that comedians from his cinematic universe, such as Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen, will join in.”

Perhaps the other most interesting story is that Bill Murray was the only original member skeptical about a third film and that getting him involved would prove difficult but Ramis talked about that as well saying,

“After taking a jab at his old friend, Ramis assured us that Murray is definitely “in,” even though the two haven’t communicated directly about the project. “I haven’t talked to him about it,” Ramis said. “I want to talk to him about it eventually. I think we just need a script, because he’s the thorniest of the group.”

I am glad this is all starting to come clean with exactly what is going on. Apatow co-producing is a good thing and so is the involvement of a young team mixed with the mentoring members we knew from the originals - sort of a passing of the torch. Now all we need to wait for is a director to be announced. I would put my money on Apatow to direct as well as produce but that may be a stretch.

Who would you cast in the young team? What is your idea for a third story ? Are you excited about a third film ?
