The Digital Living Room: Nascar Trackpass

Yesterday’s Daytona 500 may have ended early due to rain, but this years “Great American Race” still offered plenty of exciting moments. Race fans got to see the first production model of the newly rebooted Chevy Camaro based on the Bumblebee concept from the Transformers movie. Race fan Tom Cruise and recording industry stormtrooper Keith Urban were on hand to perform in the festivities and dodge awkward questions about Nicole Kidman. The big news for geeks however is the 14 day free trial to Nascar Trackpass which is an interactive web-based experience that is a great companion to the HD broadcast from Fox TV.

Track Pass records each cars position in the field via gps and allows the armchair race fan to select any driver in the 43 car field. Choosing from 3 camera angles, trackpass offers a realtime computer model of the race which can be toggled from front, top and rear. The trackpass experience also logs many statistics such as lap time and pit info and is easily searchable by driver. The coolest feature of track pass is the scanner audio which monitors communication between the drivers and crew. Installation is simple but a credit card is required for the free trial. I give this new Nascar Track Pass service 4 out of 4 lugnuts.

I am always disappointed when this race ends like this. It’s like the World series wimnner being determined by a cloudburst. Trackpass would be cool if you are sitting with that computer in your lap and watching the race. But if you are watching the race why do you need the computer. Go figure

It gives more detailed stats and you can listen to the drivers talk to their pit crews on radios

Stay away from Nascar Trackpass. very deceptive business practices. BAD Internet business. They make it easy to buy but you can’t cancel subscriptions without jumping through several hoops and they have a NO REFUND policy. No wonder fans are starting to stay away in droves. I thought baseball was bad. Nascar has become worse.
