Jaden Smith is the Karate Kid in the Re-make
Columbia Pictures is talking up a new version of the 1984 hit The Karate Kid, which is being tooled as a starring vehicle for Jaden Smith.
According to Variety, the film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment’s James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz.
Will Smith, Jaden’s father, co-starred alongside himin his feature debut, The Pursuit of Happiness, which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.
The trade says that the script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.
I do not have any disagreements with this casting or re-make because to be honest with you I do not really care. Do we really need another underdog kid who learns the whooping crane or falls in love with his daydreaming of Chuck Norris to overcome the fact he is a loser, ok so I think I am crossing movies, but you see where I am going.
I see this being a kids movie that will cater to a new generation of movie audiences. As long as they do not dishonor Mr. Miyagi then I am cool.
