DVD Review: Scrubs: The Complete Seventh Season

Scrubs: The Complete Seventh Season

Scrubs returned for its seventh season on October 25, 2007, only to bring about empty promises and then be plagued by the WGA strike. According to star, Zack Braff’s blog, he and Bill Lawrence would direct a bulk of the episodes – which happened. Also fans were promised the show would see the return of many previous characters, including appearances by Aloma Wright, formerly nurse Laverne Roberts, but as a new character, named, Nurse Shirley. Also, Lawrence hinted that the Janitor’s name would finally be revealed in the final episode but that never happened.

Season 7 was confirmed to have a reduced number of 18 episodes, but only 11 episodes were finished before the WGA strike. During the strike, several sources — including Braff’s blog — announced that the series would end with the remaining 5 episodes already produced, starting on April 10, 2008, with the seventh episode My Bad Too, and that the last 6 planned episodes of the final season would not be produced. However, on April 4, 2008, Kristin Dos Santos wrote in her E! Online gossip column Watch with Kristin that the thirteenth episode was produced and that ABC may be planning to broadcast an eighth season in the 2008 Fall season. At the time of her article, ABC refused to confirm this rumor, but since then it has been confirmed that Scrubs will appear on ABC for an eighth season as a mid-season replacement.

So WGA plagued, empty promises and the topsy-turvy of switching networks and the endless waiting if the seventh season would be the last, Scrubs still is one of the most creative and smart shows on TV. It still maintains its cult like status, blending humor, heart and sarcasm together for a surrealistic and character driven comedy that rivals even The Office. I mean how many sitcoms last 7 seasons, survive a strike and then a network switch and still manage to keep its stars and gather 18 more episodes for an eighth season? That is a testament if I have ever heard one.

A testament to this shows brilliant cast of Zack Braff and John C. McGinley as well as the shows creator Bill Lawrence. After my own personal exit as an audience member after season 6, I was glad to take a look at the series I thought might be dead to me but after appearances of Elizabeth Banks this season, a fairy-tale episode that rivals even The Princess Bride (j/k) and the same character magic that has been in this show since the pilot.

To Scrubs fans this isn’t the best season and I wouldn’t presume to tell them otherwise but it still holds value to the show but one must realize it was cursed by the “ugly monster” that was the WGA Strike, maybe that is what the metaphor was in the last episode titled My Princess.

I suggest picking this up if you are still a dedicated fan to the show, I had my doubts but now it gives me reason to watch season 8 coming soon on ABC in mid-season 2008-2009.

  • Hilarious Deleted Scenes, Alternate Lines and Bloopers

One of these days I have to sit down and watch Scrubs. I think it’s hilarious but only watched it sporadically when it’s on TV. It’s probably because there’s so much I have missed that scares me.

  • Daz

Yea, I agree Season 6 was the worst season of Scrubs but season 7 was much better, I can’t wait for the release in the UK

I gather from your review that the order on the DVD is still mucked up, so My Princess comes after My waste of Time? (so you see Kelso leaves but he is magically in the next episode)

@Jorn Yea 7 seasons is a lot, but if you only get the chance to watch 1 season I recommend Season 4

    @ Daz

Yea the order is still messed up. My Princess is listed as the last episode and Kelso magically shows up again.

    @ Jorn

I think that Daz is right. I would recommend Season 4
