Brett Ratner Is Officially Directing Conan
It is official. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brett Ratner is definitely going to direct the next big screen version of Conan. While he preps for that film, he will also continue to push forward on a forth installment of the hugely popular Eddie Murphy franchise Beverly Hills Cop.
Beverly Hills Cop IV is nearing a set start date at Paramount, where Ratner has recently set up shop. It looks like that film will more than likely head into actual production before Conan gets a chance to start shooting.
The current Conan script has been written by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly. The writers are doing a quick rewrite to incorporate some of Ratner’s own ideas, with an eye toward releasing the film in 2010.
The film is poised for an R-rating not to fall victim to the 1984 “campy” Conan: The Destroyer and will be produced by Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films are producing, along with Paradox Entertainment president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg.
“The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films,” Lerner said. “This is a coup for Millennium Films and proves that our choice of projects and material is attracting much higher-profile directors and actors.”
As for Beverly Hills Cop IV will most likely debut in the summer of 2010, with Wanted scribes Michael Brandt and Derek Haas currently working hard on the screenplay.
Well Conan fans, get ready to have your long-waited re-boot/sequel/whatever “destroyed” by the most commercially applicable “ass” of a director- X-MEN fans no what that is like. Ratner is a no-talent clown that is perfect for the re-boot of Beverly Hills Cop but not worthy of getting his grimy hands and ideas into a Conan film. Oh well, I guess this will be another crapped up movie with more suspension of disbelief than any one person can handle.
