Universal Gets Some Villains from Viper Comics

Universal has ponied up six figures for the film rights to an upcoming Viper Comics graphic novel titled Villains, and hired Matt Jennison and Brent Strickland to write the adaptation. Both whom are currently writing a Wonder Woman script for Warner Brothers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Cogan and Ryan Cody created the graphic novel that puts super bad guys center stage. The plot, told from the bad guy’s perspective, follows a young man who is failing at life and finds purpose when he meets a Svengali-style villain who takes him under his wing.

Jazma Online spoke with creator Cogan about the story saying,

“The story is told from the villain’s perspective, but there are plenty of heroes who will be showing up and try to mess up their plans,” Cogan told Jazma Online in 2006.  “Some of them are people who see things in stark black and white, right and wrong. Never mind that nobody can live up to their standards. There are other heroes who have a more pragmatic view of life and see things in terms of grays. A hero called “The Flying Ace” shows up in the first story arc. He’s a “golden age” style hero who has been doing his thing since the 1940s. He and Cobb have formed a unique relationship over many years of battles and conflict, and we get to talk about that a bit over the first four issues.”

I like this idea because it is different and somewhat unique. In this day in age with people chucking out bucks to see comic book to film movies they seem to be always about the superheroes and its nice to see one from a villains perspective as long as Universal doesn’t go the route of their NBC counterpart and mirror it after this season of Heroes, which is abismal at best, then I am happy. Good catch Universal, hey maybe Timur Bekmambetov would direct it – that I would love to see.
