Marvel Update: Downey is Iron Man for Avengers and More…

Academy Award Nominee Robert Downey Jr. is still Marvel’s “Iron Man” and will be for a 3rd Iron Man film and the Avengers film. According to Variety,

In addition to starring in “Iron Man 2,” Downey has agreed to return as billionaire Tony Stark and his crime-fighting alter ego in The Avengers and a third Iron Man installment, guaranteeing the thesp a superhero-sized payday and his own ongoing franchise as part of a four-picture deal with the comic book company.

The article then goes on to talk about director Jon Favreau’s involvement in The Avengers saying,

Jon Favreau, who is set to helm the second Iron Man pic, will also exec produce The Avengers, which is skedded for release on July 15, 2011. Pic will unite the Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Incredible Hulk characters.

Lastly, all of this is information is based on a press release by Marvel Studios who also commented that Don Cheadle is officially signed on to replace Terrance Howard as James “Rhody” Rhodes/War-Machine for the Avengers film and any Iron Man sequels.

So here is what is great about all this Marvel saw potential not only to lock-up their talent but to lock-up future projects – its one thing to have a sequel outlined in your contract but to sign a deal that would guaruntee that is pretty cool for the fans to know that the main characters are etched in stone. I am also glad that Favreau is involved in the Avengers film as well.
