Fused TV News: Stargate Atlantis Cancelled + Stargate Universe Picked Up!

Atlantis may be entering its fifth and final season but the Stargate franchise will live on with a new show titled, Stargate Universe. MGM and Sci-Fi have announced the greenlight in light of the non-renewal of Atlantis.

According to The Hollywood Reporter,

“The “Universe” pickup ensures the continuation of the popular Stargate franchise, which has been on the air in various incarnations since 1997.”

Gateworld writes a little information about the new shows synopsis saying,

“After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate’s ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny’s original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship’s navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.”

The series will employ a new cast of characters, with the network seeking a known performer for one lead role and fresh faces to play the rest of the ship’s crew. Appearances by former cast members from Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis are very possible.

The pilot is expected to premiere next year as “Universe” will start as a two-hour movie early next year and will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer.

I like this news especially with the cancellation of Atlantis, as long as Stargate is on TV something feels right with the universe. This new show does seem to have its appeal I only hope they do not go the way of Star Trek: Voyager because that would just seem to be a rip-off but if they do I hope they do things better than Voyager did. Ultimately I would love to see Nathan Fillion cast as the main character (team leader) or if they want since his series is going to be cancelled soon, Kiefer Sutherland as the main character. I can’t wait to see some more news as this series starts its development.
