Facebook: The Movie (How about MySpace: The Musical?)
One of the most popular social-networking sites on the Internet is about to get its very own movie. New York Magazine‘s Vulture section has confirmed that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is currently writing a movie about the inception of Facebook.
In preperation for this task, Sorkin has created his very own Facebook page (you have to add him as a “Friend” to view the full page) and he has also created a Aaron Sorkin & the Facebook Movie Group on the site, in which he himself said he was writing the film.
I’ve just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I’ve started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she’s been dead for 33 years.)
Vulture also confirmed that producer Scott Rudin says this is legit and Sorkin is indeed writing this film for Sony. On the Aaron Sorkin & the Facebook Movie Group, you can ask questions to the man himself write on “The Wall” and all of the other things you can do in Facebook. Sorkin did say in his brief introduction to the site that he was looking for “Facebook stories” from users as well.
A few things! I am pleased to see my favorite screenwriter getting back into the swing of things after the crap that was Studio 60, which I liked and hated! I can see this being a movie that explores connection and how Facebook is a vessel for that connection. I see the movie being a witty social commentary piece focusing on very distinct personalities all of whom use Facebook, probable a mix of people from all walks of life. I see something like a couples relationship forming, after-all its not official unless its on Facebook. I see it being a combination of Crash meets Love Actually. Sorkin is fantastic at writing great dialogue and developing great characters. In response to this I assume MySpace will be in talks with Broadway producers about a musical starring Kristin Chenowith, a former West Wing star, that will accomplish the same thing. Sorkin could write the sequel musical involving the same cast of characters and Chenowith deleting their Facebook accounts and switching into MySpace creating a drama laden film of trashy hookers and porno chicks always eneding up as friend requests or Tom being a seriel killer who stalks them.
