Friends: The Movie - A Thought from the Chic Geek
So, last week I reported on here about the Friends movie possibility. Since then lots of people are wondering about the Friends movie, including myself…As a 19 year old…I didn’t watch it when it was on TV so I have been borrowing them from my brother (Yes he watches it, too). I was watching season 6 last night where Ross and Rachel come back from Vegas married and I had forgotten how many times Ross had been divorced.
Then I got to thinking about the Friends “movie” and what it would be like. A soundtrack by the Rembrandt’s, a new type of cinematography, a story not in front of a live audience. Then the question came up of how good can a Friends movie be? Well certainly the idea is intriguing and having the full cast back would also be perfect but with Friends it seems like you need more than that. The show that spanned a decade seems to have had something that was rare in a sit-com and that was the camaraderie that the stars had. Also the fact that they were so good at feeding off one another it becomes so believable and that is something that later sitcoms have had a hard time doing.
SO what is my point? My point is that the live audience that the show was filmed in front of became a vessel for that connection and when they laughed you laughed and the actors all fed off that. So can that connection be successful again? Can these people become “Friends” one more time while we the audience see where they are now?
These are questions that I have thought of while pondering a Friends movie. The other thing I have thought of and this is my brother and his friends thought process rubbing off on me but what story would you have? Would you start where you left off? Would you start years later making the aging and time spent away evident and part of the story? Would you make this a romantic comedy? Who gets romantic because Chandler and Monica are together. The romance part of the series, though I loved Monica and Chandler finding one another, it has always been about Rachel and Ross. Do we want to relive the “We were on a break”?
So do I have answers? NO! But the simple thing to me is you do the movie because it will make money. Do the movie because I want to see these people again and become part of their lives again. I want o hear Joey saying “How you doin?” I want to see Chandler make fun of people, be a dad and a husband, I want to see Ross and Rachel reunite, I want to see Phoebe sing “Smelly Cat.” I want to see all these things and I know that the shows creators can come up with something good. At least I hope.
So anyway my brother wrote a post about the Riddler based on an idea he had while driving his car, well this is what I think about when curling my hair.
