Free Wang

indiewire.com is reporting Wayne Wang has decided to make his film, “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers,” available online, for free, shortly after it hits theaters.

The film stars Yu Feihong, Henry O, Vida Ghahremani and Pasha Lychnikoff, and was adapted from her short story by Yiyun Li and shot on a high-end high-definition video camera.

The film was lauded by critics, such as Kim Voynar at Cinematical as being “meticulously paced and beautifully shot” while Screen International writer Patrick Z. McGavin called it “not earth-shattering or particularly urgent, though it enables a talented filmmaker to work through personal ideas about assimilation and family conflict in an open, smart and gracious way.” Todd McCarthy from film industry magazine Variety described the film as “Mainly concerned with generational and cultural issues, very modest entry possesses equally modest commercial potential.”A Thousand Years of Good Prayerswas made as a companion piece to The Princess of Nebraska, a 2007 film also directed by Wayne Wang and adapted from Yiyun Li’s short story.

It won the Golden Shell Award for Best Film and also Best Actor Award at the 55th San Sebastián International Film Festival.

I don’t know too much about the film but I’m excited about the online distribution and I hope this opens the door for more independent filmmakers to follow in Mr. Wangs path.

“The best kind of Wang is a free one,” I always say.

Riddick sequel talk

In an interview with MTV, Vin Diesel said that writer-director David Twohy is currently working on the scripts, and that the “only question” is whether they will be shot together, LoTR-style, or as two separate productions. Why did it take so long? No money problems, Diesel insists — they just want to get it right. This was, after all, envisioned as a trilogy, with Pitch Black acting as a stand-alone companion film.

I think they should have stopped at Pitch Black, I really think they had lightening in a bottle with that movie and with all these sequels they are just diluting the awesomeness that was Riddick’s character in Pitch Black.

Scott Pilgrim Update

We are finally getting a Scott Pilgrim update from Edgar Wright, via WizardUniverse.com. Wright told Wizard that, “The script that we’ve written essentially covers all six. If it was at the level of Harry Potter we might be able to talk about doing six films but in this case our film is very much an adaptation of the entire six.”

Scott Pilgrim is a comedy/action/romance comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, intended to eventually consist of six digest-sized black-and-white graphic novels. The first volume was released in 2004 and, as of 2007, four have been released, all published by Portland, Oregon independent comic book publisher Oni Press.

The series is about 23-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker, hero, wannabe-rockstar, who is living inToronto and playing bass in the band “Sex Bob-Omb.” He falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona V. Flowers, but must defeat her seven “evil exes” in order to date her.

In 2005, Universal Pictures announced that they had optioned the property for a possible future film adaptation. Edgar Wright is attached as director, and Michael Bacall is to write the screenplay. Michael Cera is playing the lead role and the film title is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim is my favorite manga of all time and I’m really looking forward to the film.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is expected to start filming later this fall, and should arrive in theaters in 2009.

Babylon A.D. gets dissed by……..it’s own director?

The director of the upcoming movie, Babylon A.D. has talked amctv.com and given us further reason not to watch this film.

”I’m very unhappy with the film,” he says. “I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn’t respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience.”

”It’s pure violence and stupidity,” he admits. “The movie is supposed to teach us that the education of our children will mean the future of our planet. All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters… instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24.”

“I should have chosen a studio that has guts,” he says. “Fox was just trying to get a PG-13 movie. I’m ready to go to war against them, but I can’t because they don’t give a s–t.”

I was looking forward to this movie, but now after hearing the director’s comments I may wait for Blu-ray.

Preacher no more

Mark Steven Johnson has told Comics Continuum that his attempts to bring Garth Ennis’ Preacher to HBO as a series were close but ultimately unsuccessful.

“We were budgeting and everything and it was getting really close to going,” Johnson told The Continuum.

“It was a very faithful adaptation of the first few books, nearly word for word. They offered me the chance to redevelop it but I refused. I’ve learned my lesson on that front and I won’t do it again. So I’m afraid it’s dead at HBO.”

“I’ve heard someone is in the process of getting the rights to turn it into a feature film. I hope that happens. But I hope it happens as a series of movies as one movie couldn’t do it justice. I really love that story and I dedicated a lot of my time to honor Garth’s work. But it wasn’t meant to be.”

This news sucks, Preacher is thought of by many to be one of the greatest comic book series’ ever, and I was looking forward to this tv adaptation.

Johnson is currently in post-production on When in Rome — a comedy starrring Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Danny DeVito, Dax Shephard, Jon Heder and Angelica Huston.

Competition for Hulu

Remember all those great WB shows you used to love so much? Well they’re back, my friends in the form of their new website. TheWB.com has finally launched and is a very real threat to Hulu.

TheWB.com is significantly more feature-rich than its competitors, offering an advanced search engine and allowing users to mashup selected clips from each show. The site also allows users to modify selected portions from a number of shows using an embedded version of Adobe Premiere Express.

At launch TheWB.com includes seasons from Friends, The OC, Veronica Mars, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville, and a number of other shows, both from The WB and other TV networks. The site will also introduce a number of made-for-web TV series.

I’ve had access to TheWB.com when I was invited to the beta and I have enjoyed it so far. Its not as big or diverse as Hulu but still, this is the way I see all TV networks going in the future and I for one, and thankful for options such as these. Online TV really comes in handy when you miss an episode of your favorite show.

Quantum OF Solace

This Widget has it all, videos of people you have no idea who they are, and pictures of British people trying not to show emotions.  I’m not sure I will ever get past how terrible “Quatum of Solace” sounds for a Bond film title. Unless this is another clever way of inserting a woman’s private parts into the title of the movie. Oh well only time will tell.

Peace out MajorXero!

Why JJ Abrams will kill Star Trek’s Spirit!

» by Kent1985 in: Features

I am a self-proclaimed fan of JJ Abrams. I enjoy everything he has ever done. I certainly enjoy his grasp of mystery and suspense but also his ability to intrigue fans and bring them into the world’s he has created. However, much can be said about his ability to “flake out” on running his projects or handling the material well, mainly his produced TV shows. The thing is I am not opposed to him getting a chance to take on the most heavy fan laden project Hollywood has ever known, Star Trek. If anyone has deserved a chance to take Trek and reboot it it’s him and his creative fellows consisting of: Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

That being said, it’s the way we have heard this project being talked about by Abrams from the start allowing you to make the case that he will kill the Star Trek spirit. Many of you reading this are probably saying, what do you mean? What I mean is, I believe Abrams will sacrifice fanboy/fangirl happiness over pleasing the mass audiences. No longer will Trek fans be able to look back and say we are the first group of cult fans to drive a show back into existence and bring a series of films and TV spin-offs like none other. No longer are we a spirit that defined people learning the Klingon language and dressing like a Vulcan on a Sunday afternoon. However, it isn’t just the fanatics it is also the men and women who simply watched the broadcasts in their easy chairs to see this multi-cultural crew take on a 5 year mission and explore the galaxy, people like my father, who then extended the rite to me as a child. That spirit of Trek will be gone and will be replaced by Abrams taking classic, iconic characters and ushering in new young and “hot” faces to carry them in this “new” take on the Star Trek story.

Is “Doctor Who” Getting Big Screen Treatment?

Could a hit BBC/Sci-Fi Channel series make its way to the big screen? If it’s up to the series’ new showrunner, it very well could happen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Moffat, the new showrunner for Doctor Who, has said he would like to see a silver-screen version of the series.

“It would be good to see it in the cinema so long as it is great and fantastic,” Moffat said. He did add, though, that he didn’t want the film to butt heads with the series.

“I’m not against it … so long as it never gets in the way of the TV Show. If it got in the way of the show that would be appalling,” Moffat said.

I think this is a good idea and as a new fan of the Doctor, who started watching the series reincarnation with Christopher Eccelston, I have always said they should do a movie. I can see it being called Doctor Who: Time Lord and it being primarily the battle between the Time Lords and the Daleks, kind of a prequel to the series.
